Hi, I'm Lenny 👋.
Welcome to the Paddii blog, where we keep you informed about our mission to bring trust back to the Nigerian and global marketplace.
First, a history lesson.
Did you know there were marketplaces where trust between buyers and sellers was so strong that a seller could leave their stall unattended, and buyers would simply leave the money for whatever they took?

In the Japanese countryside, unmanned roadside vegetable stands called Mujin Hanbaijo (literally "unmanned sales places") are a centuries-old staple. Local farmers display freshly harvested morning produce with hand-written price tags (usually 100 to 200 yen) alongside a small wooden box. Passersby select their items and drop their coins directly into the box completely unsupervised.
It sounds crazy, especially when you consider how much we struggle to trust one another today. But this kind of marketplace was not just a small, isolated example of people being good to each other in far away Japan.
These types of trust-based marketplaces also exist in Ireland, Scotland, India, and even in Nigeria.
Yes, Nigeria! In the context of the traditional Yoruba market system (Ọjà), unmanned, trust-based stalls existed and are a deeply rooted historical practice.
While modern open-air markets are famously loud and centered around face-to-face bargaining, rural communities and farm roads traditionally feature an honor-system marketplace known as Ọjà Ìmúwòó or Ọjà Olóòótọ́ (literally meaning "Market of the Trustworthy").
These markets, built around trust, reputation, and community accountability, have existed throughout history.
I know what you're thinking. What about thieves? Did anyone ever take advantage of these markets?
Well, yes, there are always thieves.
But the gains from trading freely, without constantly worrying about being cheated, outweighed the risks of occasional dishonesty. Since the sellers, who were mostly farmers, could spend their time more productively, they required less storekeeping time by farming.
Think about that for a moment. A space where trust is the default, where nobody has to feel cheated, and where people can buy and sell with confidence.
This is the mission of Paddii.com.
The Real Cost of Fakeness
We are tired of hiring bad mechanics to fix our cars, only to find ourselves hiring them again the following week for another problem.
The food we eat shouldn't be a gamble with our health and well-being.
We've all heard stories, or experienced for ourselves, how damaging fake products and unreliable services can be in Nigeria.
And the problem goes beyond the money we lose.
Every time someone gets cheated, it becomes a little harder to trust the next person. We become more suspicious of sellers, more reluctant to try new businesses, and more afraid of making purchases online.
That lack of trust has a cost.
It makes people hesitate to trade with one another. It makes honest businesses work harder to convince customers that they are legitimate. And it creates an environment where even the best sellers struggle to grow. Leaving all of us poorer.
And sometimes, the consequences are much worse than losing money.
Fake medicines can fail to treat the illnesses they are supposed to cure. Poor-quality electronics can become safety hazards. And substandard products can put people's lives at risk.
The World Health Organization estimates that at least one in ten medicines in developing countries is substandard or falsified.
Nigeria has its own painful history with fake medicines.
In 1990, a contaminated paracetamol syrup incident caused the deaths of 109 children. The medicine contained diethylene glycol, a toxic substance that led to acute kidney failure.

We cannot continue to accept an economy where the quality of what we buy, the safety of the services we receive, or the honesty of the people we deal with is left entirely to chance.
Bringing Trust Back to the Marketplace
At Paddii, we want to make a difference.
We want to build a marketplace where people can find legitimate sellers, quality products, and reliable services.
We believe everyone deserves the right to quality at a fair price.
Original products and reliable services shouldn't be a luxury reserved for the rich. They should be the right of every customer, no matter how much they are paying.
And trust shouldn't be something you have to hope for. It should be something the marketplace actively works to provide.
Here's how Paddii can help.
How Paddii Works
1. Legitimate Sellers
Whether you're fixing your MacBook or getting interior decoration done for your new house, Paddii is designed to help you find trusted sellers and service professionals.
We want to make it easier to find people who can do great work and stand behind what they sell.
And if you ever have an issue with a buyer or seller, you can reach out to us, and we'll work with you to address the issue.
2. Paddii Escrow
When you pay through Paddii's escrow service, your money is held until the seller delivers.
This helps protect buyers from the uncertainty of sending money to someone they don't know and hoping everything goes well.
For eligible verified businesses, Paddii may also provide alternative payment arrangements, with support for resolving disputes when something goes wrong.
3. Paddii Services
Need someone to fix your iPhone? Decorate your office? Repair your car?
Paddii helps you connect with service professionals for the things you need done.
Whether you're based in Lagos, Abuja, or even the UK, you can use Paddii to find people offering the services you need.
Our goal is simple: make it easier to find the right person for the job, at a fair price, without the unnecessary stress.
4. Paddii Rentals
Whether you're looking for a short-term rental for your stay in Abuja, searching for a new home in Lagos or Port Harcourt, or trying to find a space for your next event, Paddii helps you discover available properties and rental opportunities.
We want to make finding a place to stay or live a more transparent and convenient experience.
Verified users can also access features such as rent-splitting on eligible properties.
5. Paddii Referral
This is one feature of Paddii that I'm particularly proud of.
It's a tough time for many people in Nigeria financially.
And if you don't have products of your own to sell, that shouldn't mean you can't participate in the marketplace.
We've designed Paddii so you can earn money by referring customers to products and services offered by others.
You can sell on commission without having to own inventory or build a business from scratch.

Buy and Sell with Peace of Mind
Imagine waking up one morning and realising you've broken your laptop screen while rolling around in bed.
You need your laptop for work, and you have a presentation tomorrow.
Immediately, you start thinking about how much it will cost to fix it, where to find someone who can do a good job, and whether they'll make the damage worse.
Now imagine being able to go to Paddii.com and search for a trusted repair professional.
You find a seller, chat with them, send screenshots of the damage, and get an estimate.
You pay the agreed amount into escrow, take your laptop to the store or arrange a delivery rider, and get it repaired.
Once the repair is completed and you've received your laptop, you release the payment.
Just in time for your work presentation tomorrow.
That is the kind of experience we want people to have on Paddii. An experience where you can focus on getting things done instead of worrying about being cheated.
Building a Marketplace We Can All Trust
We know we can't fix every problem in the Nigerian marketplace overnight.
Trust takes time to build. It takes consistent effort, honest businesses, and a willingness to hold people accountable when things go wrong.
But we believe we can make a difference.
We believe that honest sellers deserve a marketplace where their hard work is rewarded.
We believe that buyers deserve to receive what they pay for.
And we believe that everyone deserves access to quality products and reliable services, regardless of how much money they have.
This is what we're building at Paddii.
A marketplace where trust is not an afterthought, but the foundation of everything we do.
Buy and sell with trust. Use Paddii today.
